More than 1,600 journalists have been killed worldwide in the last 20 years. This means that, on average, one journalist is killed every four days.
Modern.az reports that this was stated in a new UNESCO report.
The report notes that UNESCO began systematically monitoring the killings of journalists in 2006. Since then, a total of 1641 journalists have been killed worldwide. This means that, on average, one journalist loses his life every four days.
It was stated that the main cause of death for journalists is armed conflicts.
At the same time, in the last two years, the number of killings of journalists in countries without armed conflicts has fallen to its lowest level in the last 18 years. During this period, 62 journalists were killed in those countries.
UNESCO also noted a decrease in the number of killings of women journalists.
Another notable point in the report is the increase in the number of journalists aged 25-29 among media workers.
