Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić touched upon the behind-the-scenes aspects of NATO's military intervention in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1999. The head of state declared that the official reasons put forward by the North Atlantic Alliance at that time had no real basis.
Modern.az reports that Vučić emphasized that the pretext NATO used for the bombings was a fabrication.
According to the politician, the only formal reason put forward by 19 Alliance countries to attack a sovereign state was the claim of "preventing a potential humanitarian catastrophe":
"Do you know what was the only official and formal reason for 19 NATO countries to attack Serbia and Yugoslavia? You won't believe it, but we were told that a sovereign and free country was attacked purely to prevent a potential humanitarian catastrophe. However, no humanitarian catastrophe actually occurred, and I have not seen a similar precedent in the world to this day."
The Serbian leader also added that at that time, while his country's military or police forces had not crossed the borders of another state, the decision to bomb Serbia was made.
It should be noted that as a result of NATO's "Allied Force" operation in 1999, conducted without the sanction of the UN Security Council, Yugoslavia suffered serious infrastructure and civilian losses. Belgrade continues to consider that military intervention a violation of sovereignty and an act of aggression.
