Former Russian Defense Minister Sergey Ivanov has passed away.
Modern.az reports, citing Russian media, that his death was announced by the "VTB United League", of which he was honorary president. This information was also confirmed by the Russian Military Historical Society (RMHS) - Ivanov was the chairman of its board of trustees. He was 73 years old.
Sergey Ivanov headed the Ministry of Defense from 2001 to 2007. After leaving this post, he held the positions of First Deputy and Deputy Chairman of the Russian government (2007-2011). He then moved to the Presidential Administration, which he headed from 2011-2016. From 2016 to 2026, he was the Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for environmental protection activities, ecology and transport issues.
On February 4, Sergey Ivanov resigned from this post. According to Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov, Ivanov himself requested to resign.
It should be noted that Ivanov, along with Dmitry Medvedev, was considered a potential candidate to replace Putin as president in 2008. Later, Dmitry Medvedev's candidacy was confirmed, and he served as president from 2008-2012.
