Modern.az reports that the European Parliament will finance the creation of a memorial in memory of Greek-origin individuals who were reportedly subjected to sexual violence during the Cyprus events in 1974.
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement calling this biased initiative a continuation of a political approach targeting the Turkish Armed Forces.
Ankara calls the military operation carried out in 1974 the “Cyprus Peace Operation” and states that this intervention aimed to ensure the security of Turkish Cypriots on the island. According to the official position of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is not correct to start the Cyprus issue only from 1974, and when evaluating the events, the conflicts that occurred on the island in the post-1960 period should also be taken into account.
Ankara particularly emphasizes that before the events of July 1974, the situation in Cyprus was extremely tense. According to Turkey's position, the political and military processes during that period, which were reportedly aimed at uniting the island with Greece by Greece and Greek Cypriots, posed a serious threat to Turkish Cypriots.
In this regard, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs believes that the new initiative of the European Parliament highlights only one side of the events and does not take into account the complex historical context of the Cyprus issue.
According to the position of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, when evaluating the 1974 events, the coup that took place in July of that year and the alleged acts of violence against Turkish Cypriots before it should also be taken into account.
