Azerbaijan welcomes the initiative of the United Arab Emirates' Minister of State, Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, to nominate her for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Modern.az reports that this was stated by Aykhan Hajizada, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It was noted that Azerbaijan emphasizes the importance of a selection process guided by the UN Charter, based on the professional qualities, diplomatic experience, impartiality, and ability of candidates to build consensus among member states.
"We hope that this process will conclude with a result that will contribute to the formation of a stronger, more effective, and agile United Nations that can respond to modern challenges," Aykhan Hajizada said.
It should be recalled that Lana Zaki Nusseibeh is the Minister of State of the United Arab Emirates, an experienced diplomat, and her country's former permanent representative to the UN. She served as the UAE's permanent representative to the UN from 2013 to 2024.
During her diplomatic career, she served as Vice-President of the UN General Assembly and President of the UN Women Executive Board. During the UAE's membership in the UN Security Council in 2022–2023, she chaired the Council twice.
