Members of teams close to Özgür Özel resigned before the meeting of the Council of the Republican People's Party (CHP), Turkey's main opposition party.
Modern.az reports that with the resignation of 28 members of the Party Council, the number of members in the institution decreased from 57 to 29.
Özgür Özel's team stated in a statement that since the number of members of the Party Council has fallen below the minimum limit stipulated in the legislation and party charter, the CHP leadership is obliged to hold an extraordinary congress within 45 days.
It should be noted that after the court decision, the former chairman of the party, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, returned to the CHP leadership. He is expected to chair today's meeting of the Party Council.
According to the party charter, if two-thirds of the Party Council members resign or their seats become vacant, the leadership must call an extraordinary congress within 45 days.
Thus, it is expected that the struggle for leadership in the CHP has entered a new stage and that an extraordinary congress of the party will be held in the near future.
