Khachatur Andreasyan, the mayor of Meghri, a city in Armenia's Syunik (Western Zangezur) province, has been detained.
Modern.az reports that “Armenia Today” disseminated this information.
Marina Ohancanyan, press secretary of the Armenian Anti-Corruption Committee, also confirmed the information. The committee stated that the details of the case will be announced later.
The reason for Khachatur Andreasyan's detention has not yet been disclosed.
It should be noted that Meghri is located in the south of Armenia, near the Iranian border. The city is considered one of the important transport points of the region.
The strategic importance of the region has recently increased against the background of discussions related to the TRIPP project. The project is said to envisage the creation of a transport connection passing through the south of Armenia, and the area around Meghri is one of the main points of these discussions.
