Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has accused US President Donald Trump of spreading fictional stories about her.

Modern.az reports that "Reuters" agency disseminated information about this.

The dispute was caused by Trump's interview with Italian television. Trump claimed that Meloni allegedly "begged" to take a picture with him during the G7 summit.

"She really wanted to take a picture with me. I wouldn't do it, but I felt sorry for her," Trump said in an interview with an Italian television channel.

In response, Giorgia Meloni said she was "shocked" by the US leader's words and emphasized that his comments were "completely fictional."

"Some things need to be answered immediately. Donald Trump's statements are completely fictional; frankly, they are absurd."

She also criticized Trump, saying that the US leader shows more respect to Western rivals than to his old allies.

"Trump must remember one thing: Italy and I never beg!" Meloni emphasized.

Against the backdrop of these statements, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced that he had canceled his planned visit to the United States next week.

According to "Reuters", the mutual accusations indicate that relations between Washington and Rome have sharply deteriorated, especially due to disagreements over the war around Iran.

Earlier, it was reported that Trump and Meloni were able to overcome weeks of tension at the G7 summit. At that time, António Costa even jokingly told them: "You are friends again."
