In the UFC lightweight championship fight held at the White House in connection with the 250th anniversary of the creation of the USA, Georgian-born fighter Ilia Topuria, representing Spain, unexpectedly lost.
Modern.az reports that in the main fight of the night, in the 70 kg weight category, the undefeated 29-year-old UFC champion, Spanish-Georgian Ilia Topuria, suffered a technical defeat from the interim UFC lightweight title holder, American Justin Gaethje.
In the fourth round of the intense and high-paced match, doctors stopped the fight, stating that it was dangerous for Topuria, who had received a severe blow to the eye, to continue. As a result, Gaethje, who was declared the winner by technical knockout, became the new UFC lightweight champion.
This defeat went down in history as Topuria's first unsuccessful result in his professional MMA career. The undefeated streak of the Spanish-Georgian fighter, who had not seen defeat until now, ended in this very match.
Thus, Justin Gaethje achieved one of the most important victories of his career and became the main figure of a new era in the UFC lightweight division.
