George Desmond Kamurasi, 36, goalkeeper and captain of amateur team “Se Dons” from South East London, has been elected the new king of the Tooro people in Uganda.
Modern.az reports that during his career, Kamurasi played for English semi-professional and amateur clubs “Herne Bay”, “Croydon” and “Ashford United”. He currently plays for “Sea Dons” in the ninth English league.
According to “The Telegraph”, Kamurasi came to power after his cousin Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died on August 27 after cancer treatment. He had ruled the kingdom since 1995, when he was just three years old.
The 21-member Royal Heritage Committee elected Kamurasi as the new omukama – King of Tooro. An official announcement is expected next week.
Despite his new status, Kamurasi continues his football career. He recently helped the “Se Dons” team make a successful debut in the FA Cup and advance to the second qualifying round. His team defeated “Erith Town” 2-0.
Kamurasi, a player for the “Dons” club, is considered the main candidate for the throne.
However, there is one point – he has a wife and child. According to customs, the ruler must have a wife from a noble family. Currently, Kamurasi's candidacy is being discussed by the ruling Babito clan and the royal family committee.
By the way, George is a pharmacist by education. He also has an understanding of finance and management.
The Kingdom of Tooro is located in western Uganda and is one of the country's four traditional kingdoms. The position of omukama is not political, but mainly of cultural significance.
