The cooperation relations of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan with the European Parliament in all directions were suspended, and the participation of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the activities of the European Union-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee was terminated. In accordance with the charter of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, the implementation of the procedural rules regarding the termination of the membership of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan in this organization should be started, and during the procedural period, the delegation of the Milli Majlis will not participate in the events of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly.
Modern.az reports that this was stated by Ziyafat Asgarov, Vice-Speaker of the Milli Majlis, Chairman of the commission established in the Milli Majlis to adopt a decision regarding the anti-Azerbaijan activities of the European Parliament.
During his speech, Ziyafat Asgarov stated that the decision of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan regarding the anti-Azerbaijan activities of the European Parliament. The Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan is guided by joint activities for peace, security and sustainable development in its relations with foreign parliaments and international parliamentary organizations. It promotes open, sincere and constructive dialogue based on parliamentary values and common interests.
“Unfortunately, the destructive position of the European Parliament, which violates the mentioned principles, has become the main obstacle to the development of bilateral and multilateral cooperation relations with this institution. The essence of the European Parliament's activity is the categorical rejection of the norms and principles of international law and the concept of justice. This institution has consistently ignored the 30-year occupation of our lands by Armenia, the destruction of hundreds of our cities and villages, historical, religious and cultural monuments, ethnic cleansing, and the human rights of more than one million refugees and internally displaced persons.”
The Vice-Speaker emphasized that the platforms intended for cooperation with the European Parliament, the European Union-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee and the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, have turned into a tool of pressure, blackmail and direct interference in our internal affairs against our country. Although the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan suspended all its relations with the European Parliament in 2015 due to this attitude, it restored cooperation based on numerous appeals and promises of the other side.
“Nevertheless, the European Parliament did not keep its promises and consistently continued its anti-Azerbaijan policy, slander and smear campaign. After the end of the occupation of our lands, the restoration of our territorial integrity and sovereignty under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, this activity of the European Parliament gained even greater momentum.”
He stated that the successful implementation of the peace agenda defined by President Ilham Aliyev thanks to his political will and determination, and its exemplification with the historic Washington agreements, and the international support for the head of state's initiatives serving peace, cooperation and progress, further intensified this institution's anti-Azerbaijan rhetoric. It is enough to say that after the 44-day Patriotic War, the European Parliament adopted more than 10 resolutions reflecting false information, false claims and absurd accusations against Azerbaijan.
“It should not be forgotten that the European Parliament was used as one of the main tools in the attacks against Azerbaijan on the eve and during COP29. Today, the European Parliament, where democratic values have failed, corruption and bribery are deeply rooted, and which serves lobby groups and various interest circles, has turned into a structure where Azerbaijanophobic and Islamophobic thinking is consistently expressed.
One of the main concerns is that this institution not only hinders the development of relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union. It also opposes the steps taken towards establishing long-term peace and stability in our region. By provoking revanchist forces, it tries to turn our region into a hotbed of conflict again. All this nullifies the essence of cooperation with the European Parliament,” – Z. Asgarov emphasized.
The issue was put to a vote and accepted.
