Pakistan's first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Armenia, Shafqat Ali Khan, presented his credentials to Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan.
Modern.az reports that after the credential presentation ceremony, the parties discussed the development of bilateral relations between Pakistan and Armenia, cooperation in areas of mutual interest, and new directions for cooperation. The press service of the Armenian President stated that Khachaturyan wished Shafqat Ali Khan success in his diplomatic mission and emphasized the importance of him being Pakistan's first ambassador to Armenia.
It should be noted that this appointment comes after a historic change in Pakistan's relations with Armenia.
For many years, Pakistan was one of the countries that did not recognize Armenia as an independent state. Islamabad's position was mainly linked to Armenia's occupation of Azerbaijani territories and its support for Azerbaijan's territorial integrity in the Karabakh conflict. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan also stated in previous years that Pakistan did not recognize Armenia precisely because of the occupation of Azerbaijani territories and that there were no diplomatic relations between the two countries.
However, against the backdrop of changes in the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process, a new stage has begun in relations between Pakistan and Armenia. Following this, steps have been taken towards the appointment of mutual diplomatic representatives. In July 2026, Armenia also appointed its first ambassador to Pakistan.
Shafqat Ali Khan previously served as Pakistan's ambassador to Russia and the United Arab Emirates, as well as holding various positions in his country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
