A German citizen won a court case using ChatGPT instead of a lawyer.

Modern.az reports, citing local media, that this is the first such incident in the country's history.

Leipzig resident David Hinz was receiving benefits and also looking for a job. After finding a position, he started work a week earlier than expected, but the benefits were paid for those 7 days he worked. Upon discovering this, he immediately contacted the relevant authorities.

Due to the additional 242.34 euros in benefits paid to him, the Federal Employment Agency accused Hinz of fraud. However, Hinz decided to protect his rights with ChatGPT.

Hinz's court case was scheduled for March 2025. With the help of artificial intelligence, he was able to write an 18-page application. The application was granted in October 2025. Despite some inaccuracies in the chatbot's advice, the defendant succeeded, and at the same time, the "lawyer" he hired cost him nothing.

Hinz insists that the issue is not about money, but about justice. A criminal record could have hindered his job search, which he was already finding difficult.
