There is a serious disagreement in the European Union regarding the next package of sanctions against Russia.
Modern.az reports that, according to information released by "Financial Times" citing European officials, at least six EU countries have opposed the new package of restrictions.
According to the information, Greece, France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Portugal demand that some of the sanctions proposed by Brussels be either softened or completely removed from the package.
According to European diplomats, the member states' objection to new sanctions on this scale is unprecedented in recent years.
It should be noted that sanctions against Russia in the European Union can only be adopted with the unanimous consent of all 27 member states. For this very reason, although the ambassadors' negotiations in Brussels lasted four days, the parties could not reach a common position.
In particular, Greece announced that it would not support the entire sanctions package if the transportation of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to third countries was not allowed.
Analysts believe that energy security, economic interests and national priorities are making it increasingly difficult to maintain a unified position against Russia within the EU.
