According to the publication, the Pentagon is discussing a review of Washington's position on the Falkland Islands. The US could use this issue as a means of pressure on Britain.
Washington is dissatisfied with London's slow transition to the NATO target, which envisages increasing defense spending to 5 percent of gross domestic product.
The British government, however, is facing a serious financial shortfall. Finance Minister John Healey is preparing to abandon the goal of increasing defense spending to 3 percent of GDP by 2030. Healey was one of the main proponents of this initiative during his time as defense minister.
Thus, London is faced with a complex choice between its financial capabilities and the demands of its main ally, the US.
It should be noted that the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands has been a subject of dispute between Great Britain and Argentina for many years. A possible change in Washington's position could create serious political pressure for London.
