Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, and signed a new appointment in his place.
Modern.az reports with reference to Ukrainian media that, according to the decree of the head of state, Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi, commander of the Joint Forces, has been appointed to this important post.
Born in 1982, Drapatyi is well-known in the army and society.
Drapatyi is one of the youngest generals who has served throughout the war with Russia since the first days of 2014. He fought in Donbas, commanded units in the hottest spots, and later played a key role during the full-scale invasion in 2022.
At the beginning of the Russian aggression in 2014, Drapatyi commanded a battalion of the 72nd Mechanized Brigade, which defended positions near Mariupol and Amvrosievka. His unit participated in battles for the liberation of a part of the Donetsk region and kept the lines under constant fire.
Drapatyi led complex operations in the south and east. Later, he was appointed Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and in 2024, Commander of the Ground Forces.
Subsequently, a new group, the Joint Forces, led by Drapatyi, was created as part of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
M. Drapatyi distinguished himself in the liberation of the right-bank part of the Kherson region and in the defense of the Kharkiv direction. He has great authority in the army.
His candidacy for commander-in-chief was also supported by former defense minister Fedorov.
