US President Donald Trump wants Gianni Infantino, president of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), to be the next Secretary General of the UN.
Modern.az reports that the New York Post newspaper published this information.
According to the information, close relations were formed between Trump and Infantino during the 2026 World Cup hosted by the USA, Mexico and Canada. The publication writes that the FIFA president made serious efforts to win the favor of the US leader. He also presented Trump with the FIFA Peace Award last December.
According to the newspaper's source, Trump believes that Infantino has gained great respect in the international arena, has the ability to bring people together, and for this reason believes that he can lead the UN.
It is not yet known whether Trump has discussed this idea with Infantino and whether the FIFA president intends to be a candidate for the post of UN Secretary General.
It should be noted that Gianni Infantino announced in April of this year that he will run again for the position of FIFA president in the elections to be held in 2027.
It should be reminded that the term of office of the current UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will expire on December 31, 2026.
