The claim that 50 percent of the Caspian Sea belongs to Iran has been denied in Iran.
Modern.az reports that in a statement to Jamaran publication, Iran's former ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mohsen Pakain, stated that there is no historical agreement or legal document confirming that 50 percent of the Caspian Sea belongs to Iran.
According to him, even during the existence of the Soviet Union, there was no legal agreement that 50 percent of the Caspian Sea belonged to Iran and the other 50 percent to the USSR.
According to information released by "Jamaran" publication, citing Pakaein, the former ambassador said that the delay in Iran's ratification of the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea could weaken Tehran's positions in fishing, shipping, ecology, and other issues.
Pakain recalled that the Convention, signed by the presidents of the five Caspian littoral states on August 12, 2018, was the result of 20 years of diplomatic negotiations. According to him, 52 expert meetings, 10 meetings at the level of foreign ministers, and 5 summits were held on the document.
It should be noted that the spokesperson of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ismail Baqai, also announced that the Convention will be ratified in the Iranian parliament in the coming days.
