According to preliminary data, the oil pollution off the coast of Qeshm Island is believed to have been caused by a foreign cargo ship. The pollution was recorded in three parts of the coast and on the sea surface.
Modern.az reports that this was shared by Iranian Foreign Ministry representative Ismail Baghai on his "X" account.
Baghai wrote that this incident is one of the examples of large-scale, both overt and hidden, pollution inflicted on the waters of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, as well as the marine ecosystem of the region, over recent decades. According to him, the damage caused to Iran's coastal areas amounts to trillions of dollars.
The Iranian official called for environmental security to be taken into account in the future management of the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that all countries and companies benefiting from shipping through the strait bear legal and moral responsibility for eliminating the environmental damage caused to the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.
