Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has emerged as a suitable candidate for the federal presidency in a poll conducted approximately five years after her retirement from politics.

Modern.az reports that 47 percent of participants in a poll conducted by Forsa on behalf of RTL/ntv stated that Merkel is suitable for the position of Federal President of Germany.

The second five-year term of current President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will end next year. After that, a new candidate for the head of state in Germany must be elected.

Support for Merkel is not limited to the center-right political camp. 55 percent of supporters of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU) consider the former chancellor suitable for this position.

Among supporters of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), this figure is also 55 percent. Among voters of the Greens, support for Merkel reaches 75 percent, and among left-wing voters, it is 70 percent.

Even 23 percent of supporters of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) believe that Merkel is suitable for one of the country's highest state positions.

However, Merkel herself does not seem to intend to return to politics. When the first news about her possible candidacy spread in February 2026, the former chancellor sharply rejected these claims, calling them "absurd."
