The ongoing war in Iran could lead to mass starvation among vulnerable populations.
Modern.az reports with reference to foreign media that Karl Skau said this.
According to him, the restriction of shipments through the Strait of Hormuz has led to an increase in fuel prices. This, in turn, has increased the cost of humanitarian operations worldwide, accelerated the rise in food prices, and created serious problems in the supply of fertilizers from the Persian Gulf region.
Karl Skau noted that 266 million people in the world suffered from hunger in 2025. According to him, another 363 million people are expected to face acute food shortages this year.
The UN official stated that the situation is particularly severe in Afghanistan, Somalia, and Sri Lanka. In his opinion, the continued tension in the region poses a serious threat to global food security.
