A tense debate erupted in the Armenian parliament between the ruling "Civil Contract" party and the opposition "Strong Armenia" faction over the country's map.
Modern.az reports that Taron Chakhoyan, a deputy from the ruling party, accused opposition representative Aram Vardevanyan of frequently changing his political stance.
Chakhoyan stated that the opposition had refused to accept a map depicting Armenia's internationally recognized borders at the previous session.
"On the one hand, you don't accept that map, and on the other hand, you are a candidate for the position of Deputy Speaker of Parliament. So what is your faction's problem with the map of Armenia?" he asked.
Aram Vardevanyan responded by stating that the presented map was material used by the ruling party in its election campaign.
"The map of Armenia cannot be the property of any political party. The map is our pride and cannot be turned into a propaganda tool," said the opposition deputy.
During the discussion, Vardevanyan also reminded the government representatives which map was displayed in the parliament before 2020.
In response, Taron Chakhoyan stated that Nagorno-Karabakh has never been part of the Republic of Armenia.
"If you mean whether Nagorno-Karabakh was on the map of Armenia, the answer is unequivocal - it was not. Because Nagorno-Karabakh has never been part of the Republic of Armenia," he emphasized.
