The issue of the David Gareji monastery complex in Georgia has once again come to the fore.
Modern.az reports that Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, while answering a journalist's question, sharply criticized the campaign about a supposed secret agreement with Azerbaijan regarding David Gareji.
The Prime Minister stated that campaigns conducted through some media outlets regarding the David Gareji issue and other topics should be evaluated as "anti-state activities".
"There is only one assessment for the campaign regarding David Gareji and other campaigns they conduct through dark media - these are anti-state activities that must be given an appropriate response," Kobakhidze said. According to him, there are various problems in Georgia, including issues related to corruption, and no one can hide these problems behind "false campaigns".
Kobakhidze said that the campaign around the David Gareji issue was ordered.
He noted that, despite this, certain individuals and a specific media organization tried to campaign around an issue sensitive for the state. According to the Prime Minister, this also shows the "anti-state nature" of the customers and executors of the campaign.
The Prime Minister did not rule out that the David Gareji issue could be developed on a legal basis:
"This campaign is related to such a sensitive issue that it can be given a legal assessment. However, all this must be decided by the relevant institutions and departments."
It should be noted that the David Gareji complex is an ancient monastery complex located near the Azerbaijan-Georgia border. Separate parts of the complex are located in the territories of Azerbaijan and Georgia. For this reason, the David Gareji issue is considered one of the most sensitive topics related to the delimitation of the border between the two countries. The Azerbaijani side advocates for the resolution of the issue based on international law and existing historical-cartographic documents.
