The price of diesel fuel in Turkey has approached a record high. Approximately 6.5 liras were added to the price of a liter of diesel at gas stations overnight.
Modern.az reports with reference to foreign media that after the price increase, the price of one liter of diesel reached 95.5 liras in Istanbul, 96.75 liras in Ankara, and 97 liras in Izmir.
In the eastern provinces of Bitlis, Hakkari, and Muş, one liter of diesel rose to 98.5 liras. Thus, only 1.5 liras remained for diesel to reach the psychological threshold of 100 liras. In August, the government zeroed out the special consumption tax (ÖTV) for one month to prevent the price from exceeding this limit. As of September 1, the tax has been re-applied, and a tax of 3 liras is calculated for each liter of diesel.
According to the information, the tax is expected to be gradually increased in the coming months. The increase is planned to be 6 liras in October, 9 liras in November, 12 liras in December, and approximately 14 liras from January 2027. In addition, the rise in the price of "Brent" crude oil to 110 dollars and the restrictions on oil supply around Iran do not give grounds for optimistic forecasts regarding fuel prices.
The "Sözcü" newspaper writes that if no additional administrative measures are taken, another 2.5-3 liras may be added to the price of diesel tonight. In this case, for the first time in the history of the Republic of Turkey, the price of one liter of diesel may exceed 100 liras.
