The conflict around Iran and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz have sharply increased the energy costs of the European Union.

Modern.az reports that this was stated by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, during her speech in the European Parliament.

According to her, since the beginning of the conflict, an additional 90 billion euros have been spent on imported fossil fuels:

“During this period, the fossil fuels we imported cost us an additional 90 billion euros. In return, we did not get a single molecule of additional energy.”

The head of the European Commission called on EU countries to accelerate the development of their energy sources. She stated that investments in renewable energy, nuclear energy, biomethane, and other technologies should be increased.

According to von der Leyen, the development of accessible and local clean energy should reduce Europe's foreign energy dependence and the economic impact of future crises.
