During the Armenian occupation, settlements in Karabakh were destroyed, and building materials and even tombstones were plundered and sold.

Modern.az reports that President Ilham Aliyev said this when receiving a delegation consisting of heads of Muslim religious administrations and other religious representatives of the Organization of Turkic States.

The head of state noted that not a single building remained intact in Aghdam during the occupation.

“During the occupation, not a single building remained in Aghdam – neither in the city nor in the occupied villages. All buildings were demolished, their stones were plundered and taken away and sold in markets,” the President said.

According to Ilham Aliyev, the looting did not spare cemeteries either:

“They took away the demolished stones, the roofs of the buildings, the frames – everything, even the tombstones. They erased the names on the tombstones and sold them as marble and granite in markets. We faced such unprecedented looting. They even dug up graves and took out the gold teeth of the deceased.”

The President stated that one of the main goals of the destruction was to make it impossible for Azerbaijanis to return to their native lands.
