The US will allocate 100 million dollars for the repair of the new safe cover at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP).
Modern.az reports that this was announced by Ukraine's First Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Energy Denis Shmyhal on his "Telegram" channel.
"During the International Chernobyl Conference, we discussed with partners the financial needs for the restoration of the cover. As of today, this amounts to approximately 500 million euros," he wrote.
Shmyhal expressed gratitude to the US Department of State, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, the US delegation and administration that operated in Kyiv for their contribution to strengthening radiation safety in Europe.
It should be recalled that on the night of February 14, 2025, a Russian drone damaged the safety cover of the Chernobyl NPP. The structure lost its tightness and can no longer maintain the necessary humidity level below 40%.
On April 26 of this year, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), stated that the damage to the cover was more serious than previously thought.
