Atheism is one of the widespread worldviews in the world. However, determining the exact number of atheists is not easy. This is because people perceive the concepts of "atheist", "irreligious", "agnostic" or "non-religious" differently. Various international studies try to determine the number of atheists and people without religious beliefs by country.
Modern.az reports that the number of atheists in individual countries has been announced based on a survey conducted by World Values Survey and WIN/Gallup last year with 64 countries and more than 80 thousand respondents.
Sweden, Japan and China lead the list of countries with the highest atheist indicators. In these countries, 76%, 72% and 71% of the population, respectively, are atheists. The next places are Denmark (70%), Norway (70%), Estonia (70%), South Korea (65%), Spain (61%), Germany (60%) and Finland (60%).
According to the study, 37% of respondents in Azerbaijan identified themselves as atheists. However, this figure does not mean that an absolute 37 percent of the entire population of Azerbaijan is atheist.
Interestingly, Azerbaijan is at the same level - 37% - with the USA and Argentina in this indicator. In Russia and Ukraine, the indicator was 36%, and in Poland, it was 35%. The indicator of atheists in Kazakhstan is 49%, in Armenia 35%, and in Iran 28%. The share of non-religious people in Turkey in the same list was shown as 24.5%.
It should be noted that studies are conducted in different years and with different methodologies across countries. Therefore, it is possible to find different results for the same country in different sources.
