The Estonian parliament has elected 51-year-old Chancellor of Justice Ulla Madise as the country's new president.
Modern.az reports that Madise was elected head of state by secret ballot at a parliamentary session held on September 2.
She received 71 votes out of 101 deputies. 7 deputies did not participate in the voting, and 12 deputies were not present at the session. To be elected president in Estonia, the support of two-thirds of the members of parliament, i.e., at least 68 deputies, is required.
51-year-old Ulla Madise previously worked at the Ministry of Justice, the Constitutional Committee of the parliament, served as chief inspector at the State Audit Office, and as legal advisor to the president.
She has held the position of Chancellor of Justice of Estonia since 2015. At the end of 2021, she was re-elected to this position for a second term.
Madise's candidacy for president was put forward by 75 deputies. The relevant documents were submitted to the Republican Election Commission by representatives of the "Reform Party", "Estonia 200", "Homeland" and social democrats, as well as deputies not belonging to any faction.
Ulla Madise will officially begin her duties as president by taking the oath in parliament on October 12.
