The Polish government has approved a new bill restricting the use of smartphones and smartwatches by students in schools. If the law comes into force, students under the age of 16 will not be able to use these devices on school premises during class time, as well as during breaks and after-school activities. The bill requires the approval of the country's parliament and Polish President Karol Nawrocki to come into force. If approved, the new rules will be implemented from September 1, the start of the 2026-2027 academic year.
According to the new rules, although students will be able to bring their phones and smartwatches to school, special places will be allocated in schools to store the devices during the day. Students will have to keep their devices at these points until classes are over. The ban will not apply to teachers and school staff. Also, sick students or students with special needs who use electronic devices to monitor blood sugar levels or for other medical needs will be an exception. In emergencies, students will be able to use their phones.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that the government is taking this step to combat phone and internet addiction among children. According to him, although this is not a perfect solution, it is an important step to prevent the problem.
