The drought caused by a prolonged heatwave in most of Europe has led to a sharp decrease in the water level of the Danube River.
Modern.az reports that this situation has seriously affected the operation of large power plants in Hungary, Serbia, and Romania.
Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar stated that all reactors of the "Paks" Nuclear Power Plant, which produces approximately half of the country's electricity, will be shut down starting Monday due to insufficient water for cooling.
According to him, the plant is currently operating at only 10 percent capacity. The Prime Minister noted that for the first time in its 44-year operational history, all reactors of the NPP are being shut down simultaneously.
Peter Magyar emphasized that this decision will significantly increase the load on Hungary's electricity grid and necessitate the introduction of certain restrictions on electricity consumption in the country.
In neighboring Romania, explosions were carried out under the control of the army to stabilize the situation. The goal was to divert water from the canal to the "Cernavodă" Nuclear Power Plant. One of the two reactors of this plant, which provides approximately 20 percent of Romania's electricity, has already been shut down.
According to reports, there is a risk of the second reactor also being shut down if the water shortage continues.
