The Sun continues to show high activity. Modern.az reports that, according to Russian scientists, a powerful X-class flare, the highest class, occurred on the Sun on the night of July 1. This is considered the most powerful event possible in the current classification of solar flares.

What happened?

This was reported on the Telegram channel of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The flare was recorded around midnight.

Solar flares are divided into five classes based on the power of X-ray radiation: A, B, C, M, and X. Each subsequent class is 10 times more powerful than the previous one. X-class flares are considered the most powerful events and pose a potential threat to technologies on Earth.

Possible consequences for Earth

Powerful flares are often accompanied by massive coronal mass ejections of solar plasma. These clouds of charged particles, when they reach Earth, can cause magnetic storms, disruptions in communication systems, malfunctions in satellite operations, and problems in power grids.

Interestingly, on June 30, an M-class flare was also recorded on the Sun for the third time in one day. This indicates that the Sun is in a phase of high activity.

The Sun's “heartbeat”

In early June, scientists from the University of Birmingham announced that they had discovered periodic pulsations in the Sun, reminiscent of a unique “heartbeat.” These processes are thought to be related to the restructuring of magnetic fields within it. Such changes directly affect solar activity and space weather, which impacts Earth's magnetosphere.

What is expected next?

The exact consequences of the recent X-class flare are still being evaluated by specialists. Astronomers continue to monitor the Sun. According to scientists, the number of such events may further increase in the near future during the maximum phase of the Sun's 25th activity cycle.

On July 1, an X-class flare of the highest power occurred on the Sun. Such events can be accompanied by powerful ejections of solar plasma and cause magnetic storms on Earth. Scientists state that the Sun is currently in a phase of high activity, and this situation may continue in the near future.
