In 2025, the global tourism sector will set a historical record, contributing 11.7 trillion US dollars to the world economy. This figure is approximately 10 percent of global GDP.

Modern.az reports, citing foreign media, that while the overall figures are high, the share of tourism in countries' economies varies significantly. In some states, tourism is the main source of income, while in others, its impact on the economy is relatively limited.

Macau, a special administrative region of China, ranks first among the countries and territories most dependent on tourism. Here, tourism accounts for 70.8 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP).

The island of Aruba in the Caribbean (69.7 percent) ranks second, and the Maldives (68.1 percent) ranks third. The small European state of Andorra is in fourth place on the list. In this country, the share of tourism in the economy reaches 66.5 percent.

Among the large European economies, Spain is the country that earns the most from tourism. Tourism accounts for approximately 16 percent of the economy here. The country received a record number of 96.5 million foreign tourists in 2025.

Greece and Portugal are also among the European countries where tourism has a high share in the economy. In France and Italy, this indicator varies between 9-12 percent.

It should be noted that on the map, among the countries in the region, the share of tourism revenues in the economy is shown as 4.4 percent in Turkey and only 0.4 percent in Russia.
