Modern.az reports that this was stated by Aykhan Hajizada, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, in response to a local media question regarding the commentary of Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, on the Karabakh region and the CSTO topic.
He stated that Maria Zakharova's repeated statements regarding the former Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict distort reality.
"The Karabakh region has always been recognized by the international community, including the Russian Federation, as an integral part of Azerbaijan. For this reason, the attempt to continuously keep on the agenda the issue of applying CSTO mechanisms to the sovereign territories of Azerbaijan, which were under Armenian occupation for 30 years, and linking this to whether the Karabakh region is recognized by Armenia, is not only contrary to the official position of the Russian side regarding Azerbaijan's Karabakh region but also completely unfounded.
Azerbaijan has restored its territorial integrity and sovereignty in accordance with the requirements of international law, and with this, the former conflict has been resolved. In this framework, the practice of interpreting topics related to Russia-Armenia relations in connection with Azerbaijan should be stopped," the MFA official emphasized.
It should be noted that on July 27, Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, stated during her speech at the "Gvardeysk" youth forum that "although Armenia called for the use of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) mechanism, the question was who and to what it should be applied.
