Opposition factions of the Armenian Parliament refused to take the oath of office in protest against the non-invitation of the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Garegin II, to the first session of the 9th convocation of the National Assembly.
Modern.az reports that opposition deputies accused the parliament leadership of violating the parliament's regulations by not inviting Catholicos Garegin II to the first session.
According to them, the absence of the country's supreme religious leader at the first session contradicts the requirements of the legislation. As a sign of protest, deputies of the opposition factions did not participate in the oath-taking ceremony in parliament.
The issue caused political tension in parliament. The opposition regarded this step as disrespect for the authority of the religious institution and parliamentary traditions.
