During the 8 months of 2026, the largest amount of cargo entered Azerbaijan via Azerbaijan Railways (ADY) from the Russian Federation.
ADY informed Modern.az in response to an inquiry that during the 8 months of the current year, nearly 3 million tons of cargo were sent to Azerbaijan from Russia by rail. Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan occupy the second and third places in the list. Approximately 1.5 million tons of cargo were transported from each of these countries.
Among other countries, more than 600 thousand tons of cargo entered from Georgia, including transit shipments, more than 551 thousand tons from Belarus, and more than 218 thousand tons from Brazil. In total, more than 12 million tons of cargo were transported by ADY during the current period. Energy carriers accounted for 3.3 million tons of the transported cargo. In addition, nearly 2.2 million tons of chemical industry products, more than 1.3 million tons of construction materials, more than 1.2 million tons of food industry products, more than 1.1 million tons of grain and cereals, more than 1 million tons of wood, cellulose and paper products, and more than 965 thousand tons of metal ores and metal industry products were transported.
In terms of specific products, wheat was transported the most. Its volume exceeded 996 thousand tons. This was followed by more than 900 thousand tons of nitrogen fertilizers and more than 858 thousand tons of fuel oil. More than 700 thousand tons of diesel fuel, nearly 682 thousand tons of alkali metals and metalloids, and nearly 600 thousand tons of sugar were also transported by rail.
According to ADY, transit shipments accounted for the largest share of transported cargo. During the 8 months, the volume of transit cargo transportation amounted to 4.9 million tons, or 41 percent of total transportation. The volume of import shipments was 3.5 million tons, export shipments were nearly 2 million tons, and domestic shipments were 1.6 million tons. Among the main destination directions for cargo sent from Azerbaijan, including transit cargo, Georgia is in the lead. 1.4 million tons were transported in this direction, and 1.6 million tons including transit shipments. The volume of cargo transported in the direction of Turkey was nearly 490 thousand tons.
