Argentina national team captain Lionel Messi explained why he could not hold back his tears after the 2026 World Cup round of 16 match against Egypt.
Modern.az reports that world champion Argentina, despite being 0:2 down in the first half of that match, made a determined comeback in the second half and won 3:2. Although Messi failed to convert a penalty in the first half, he provided an assist and scored a goal himself after the break.
"It was a feeling of joy and relief. Because we wanted to continue the fight. I was very touched by what happened in the game and all the efforts we made for the victory.
I was very angry with myself for missing the penalty. It's not easy to play when you're 0:2 down," Messi told reporters.
In the quarter-finals, the Argentina national team will face the Switzerland national football team, who defeated Colombia.
