The Baku Initiative Group (BIG) issued a statement regarding the results of the provincial elections held in Kanaky-New Caledonia.
Modern.az reports that the statement expressed congratulations on the results achieved by pro-independence political forces in the elections held on June 28.
BIG stated that the official results show that the independence camp in Kanaky-New Caledonia has achieved a significant victory both politically and democratically. According to the organization's assessment, the elections were held against the backdrop of events that occurred in 2024, discussions about the future status of the territory, and France's decisions regarding the expansion of the electorate.
The statement noted that despite attempts to weaken the voice of the local population, pro-independence supporters gained political advantage by winning 26 mandates in the legislature, advocating for full sovereignty.
The Baku Initiative Group highly appreciated the resistance of the Kanak people and stated that the election results indicate that the continuation of France's colonial policy is not possible. The organization emphasized that the right to self-determination is one of the fundamental principles of international law and that the decolonization process cannot be resolved unilaterally.
Finally, BIG reiterated its solidarity with the independence forces of Kanaky-New Caledonia, expressing its support for peaceful efforts towards the recognition of the right to self-determination and the completion of the decolonization process.
