The initiative of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs to bring the issue of recognition of the fictitious "Armenian genocide" for discussion in June caused concern in Azerbaijan. According to the information, official Baku was not informed about this initiative in advance.
It is stated that official Baku considered that when the initiative was being prepared, the sensitivity of the issue for Azerbaijan, the special nature of Azerbaijan-Turkey relations, as well as its possible effects on Azerbaijan-Israel strategic partnership, were not sufficiently taken into account.
According to the information, on June 29, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan conveyed its official position to the Israeli side and called for a review of the initiative. Through diplomatic channels, arguments were presented to the Israeli side that this step could negatively affect both Turkey-Israel relations and cooperation with Azerbaijan.
It is noted that there were also supporters of reviewing the initiative in various political circles in Israel. It is stated that Azerbaijan's arguments were supported by representatives of various political camps, experts and state institutions.
As a result, the process of advancing the initiative was practically stopped, and the discussion of the issue at the level of the Israeli government and parliament was not continued.
This event is considered an example of Azerbaijan's policy of protecting its national interests and continuing constructive dialogue with its strategic partners. It is also noted that Baku demonstrated its principled support for Ankara in matters affecting Turkey's national interests within the framework of its strategic partnership with Israel.
It should be recalled that in recent months, Azerbaijan has also acted as one of the dialogue platforms between Turkey and Israel on the Syrian issue. A number of international media outlets noted that Baku made diplomatic efforts to normalize relations between Ankara and Tel Aviv.
