According to the Seismological Center of Tehran University, a 5-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale occurred in western Iran on Wednesday morning.

Modern.az reports with reference to foreign media that the earthquake was recorded near the Gilan region of Kermanshah province.

The center stated that the underground tremors occurred at 00:23 local time at a depth of 9 kilometers.

No casualties or destruction have been reported.

Iran is located in a seismically active region and has been exposed to many destructive earthquakes in recent years. The most catastrophic earthquake in the country's recent history - at least 34,000 people died as a result of 6.7 magnitude underground tremors in the city of Bam in 2013.

In July 2022, at least five people died and more than 80 people were injured as a result of a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Hormozgan province, located in the south along the Gulf coast.
