Two former Chinese defense ministers — Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe — have been sentenced to death on corruption charges.

It should be noted that the death sentences are applied with a two-year reprieve. Within the framework of this practice, which is characteristic of the Chinese legal system, if the convict does not intentionally commit a crime in prison within two years, the death penalty is automatically commuted to life imprisonment.
In some cases, if special conditions are provided for in the court decision, the sentence may also be replaced by deprivation of liberty for a period of 25 years.
