The resigning Prime Minister of Great Britain, Keir Starmer, could be a candidate to become NATO Secretary General in 2028.

Modern.az reports that the “Observer” newspaper published this information, citing sources.

"There are reports that he is interested in the vacant position of NATO Secretary General in 2028," the newspaper writes.

It is noted that to achieve this, he will have to remain a Labour MP in the House of Commons after leaving the post of prime minister.

Also, he must maintain a good relationship with his likely successor, Andy Burnham, as he will need London's support to lead the alliance.

It should be noted that Starmer announced his resignation as leader of the ruling Labour Party on June 22, stating that he would remain Prime Minister until a new leader is elected.

NATO is currently led by former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. He was elected Secretary General of the alliance for a four-year term in 2024.
