US President Donald Trump has spoken about the possibility of military action against Oman amid talks with Iran.
Modern.az reports that Trump told Fox News in an interview that Washington could take military action if Oman obstructs US peace deal with Iran, especially its plans regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
"If Oman gets in our way, we will bomb them," the US president said.
Trump's statement comes at a time when talks between Iran and the US and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz continue. Currently, Tehran and Oman are trying to finalize an agreement on restoring the shipping regime in the strategic waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz is of great importance for world energy trade. The uncertainty surrounding the operation of the strait amid the US-Iran confrontation has caused serious concern in the oil and gas markets. The US, however, states that it does not accept Iran's control over the strait.
Trump's latest statement is also noteworthy in terms of relations between Washington and Muscat. Oman has long acted as a diplomatic mediator between Iran and the West and plays an important role in talks with Tehran.
At the current stage of peace talks between Iran and the US, serious disagreements remain. According to Reuters, no progress has been made in recent days towards restoring the agreement between the parties.
