A diaspora Armenian has sued the Armenian state in an international court.
Modern.az reports with reference to local media that American Armenian businessman James Tufenkian has filed a complaint against Armenia with the European Court of Human Rights.
The dispute concerns a plot of land located at 32 Buzand Street in the city center, which was included in the "Old Yerevan" project in the early 2000s. Due to its "public interest" status, the property was confiscated, and the businessman has been unable to develop a hotel project there for approximately 25 years.
Tufenkian appealed to the European Court of Human Rights after Armenian courts, including the Constitutional Court, rejected his claims in 2025. The dispute arose over the price of the site for the "Old City" project: the construction company offers 642 million drams, while an independent appraisal values the price at 1.2-1.3 billion drams. The businessman agrees only if he receives fair compensation.
