The unstable weather conditions and intense rainfall observed in May have increased concerns in society about how the summer months will pass. The frequent changes in weather in recent days, strong rains and floods in some regions have brought discussions about the impact of climate change on Azerbaijan back to the agenda. The hail and intense rain that recently fell in Baku have further increased this concern.
Experts believe that global warming and changes in the atmosphere observed worldwide are now more prominently felt in regional countries, including Azerbaijan.
In a statement to Modern.az on the topic, weather expert Javidan Aliyev stated that unstable weather conditions were observed in May before, but the main difference now is the intensity of precipitation.
According to him, this situation is related to global warming:
“Long-term and strong heat waves are also not excluded in the summer months. Although precipitation falling to normal levels is considered a positive thing for agriculture, short-term and excessively intense rains cause various diseases, as well as plants to fall over.”
Professor Adil Geybulla noted that climate change is currently felt more seriously worldwide.
According to him, one of the main reasons for the disruption of the thermal balance on Earth is the excessive accumulation of carbon dioxide and other pollutants in the atmosphere:
“Since carbon dioxide retains heat, it leads to an increase in global temperature. Because this heat is not evenly distributed on Earth, anomalous heat is observed in some areas, and unusual cold in others. Strong rains, floods, and other extreme weather events that were rarely encountered before are also related to these processes.”
The professor also added that climate change seriously affects not only weather conditions but also human health and the ecosystem:
“Climate change can lead to the activation of various infections, the disruption of the ecosystem, and the extinction of some species. Therefore, a global and serious approach to this issue is necessary.”
