Russian President Vladimir Putin recalled Andrey Gromyko, who was the USSR's foreign minister, during a meeting in the “SCO+” format held in Bishkek.
Modern.az reports, citing local media, that Putin noted that Gromyko was often known in the West by the nickname “Mr. No”.
The Russian leader drew attention to the fact that dissatisfaction with the activities of the UN existed even in the Soviet era.
“It is no coincidence that the Soviet Union's foreign minister, Mr. Gromyko, was often called “Mister No”,” Putin said.
Andrey Gromyko was given the nickname “Mr. No” due to his frequent use of the veto right in the UN Security Council to protect the interests of the USSR.
According to Putin, Gromyko also used this right to defend states fighting for freedom from colonial dependence and for independence in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.
