The testimony of FETÖ member Burkay Karatəpə, who participated in the operation to capture President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the coup attempt in Turkey on July 15, 2016, has been made public.
Modern.az reports that Karatəpə, who had been on international wanted lists for many years, spoke in his testimony about how he was recruited into the organization and the details of the operation planned on the night of the coup.
According to him, his ties with FETÖ began in 1998 while he was in high school and continued after he was admitted to military school. Karatəpə claimed that members of the organization helped him become an officer by providing him with exam questions in advance.
According to the testimony, a secret meeting was held in Istanbul a few days before July 15, 2016. Participants were instructed to be ready for an important operation, not to tell anything even to family members, and not to take personal communication devices with them.
According to Karatəpə, on the night of the coup, the group was taken by helicopter to the Çiğli military base. It was there that they were informed that a coup d'état was taking place in the country, and their task was to capture President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at his location and take him to a designated address.
He noted that after Erdoğan's location was determined, the armed group immediately set off towards Marmaris to carry out the operation.
