Armenia could become one of the potential buyers of Azerbaijani gas to reduce its energy dependence on Russia. However, in this case, Yerevan will have to compete with European countries, where the demand for Azerbaijani gas is increasing.
Modern.az reports that the German publication “Focus” analyzed the current situation in Armenia's gas supply.
The publication wrote that Gazprom's suspension of gas supplies to Armenia from September 15 to 25 resembles the tactics previously used by the Kremlin against Europe.
“Gazprom Armenia” explained the interruption by planned repair work on the gas pipeline in Russia. The company stated that there would be no shortage in the country due to internal reserves and additional gas supplies from Iran.
The main point highlighted by “Focus” is that the gas supply was suspended a few days after Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced his intention to reduce energy dependence on Russia.
Pashinyan stated on September 11 that Armenia plans to diversify its natural gas imports. In 2025, Russia accounted for approximately 82 percent of the country's imported gas. Armenia's annual gas imports amounted to approximately 2.7 billion cubic meters.
The German publication writes that in these circumstances, Azerbaijan could become an alternative gas source for Armenia. On the same day as Pashinyan's speech, opinions were voiced in Yerevan about being ready to purchase gas from Azerbaijan.
However, “Focus” reminded that a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia has not yet been signed. The publication noted that Baku demands Yerevan to remove territorial claims against Azerbaijan in its Constitution.
The article emphasized that Azerbaijan produced approximately 49 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2023. The Southern Gas Corridor plays a key role in transporting Azerbaijani gas to Europe. The route delivers Azerbaijani gas through Georgia and Turkey to Greece, and from there to other European markets.
The European Union's efforts to reduce its dependence on Russian gas are increasing the demand for Azerbaijani gas. Hungary and Slovakia are also among the countries that have turned to Azerbaijan while searching for alternative supply sources.
According to “Focus”, if Armenia wants to buy Azerbaijani gas, it will effectively have to compete with several European countries for the same source.
It should be noted that Russia's share in the European Union's gas imports has fallen from 45 percent before 2022 to approximately 12 percent currently. The Union continues to take measures towards completely abandoning Russian energy.
