For the first time, a Turkish-origin politician has been elected as the prime minister of a federal state in Germany.

Modern.az reports with reference to foreign media that Cem Özdemir, a member of the Green Party, has been elected as the new prime minister of the state of Baden-Württemberg.

At the state parliament meeting held in Stuttgart, his candidacy was supported by 93 deputies. 26 deputies voted against, and 4 remained neutral.

Thus, Cem Özdemir became the first head of a federal state government of Turkish origin in German history.

He replaced Winfried Kretschmann, who held this position for 15 years.

It should be noted that Cem Özdemir is the second state prime minister elected from the Green Party in Germany. The ruling "green-black" coalition (Greens and Christian Democratic Union - CDU) in Baden-Württemberg holds 112 seats in the state parliament.
