US President Donald Trump has announced his intention to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un again by the end of 2026.
Modern.az reports, citing Reuters, that Trump emphasized his good personal relationship with Kim Jong Un. He noted that Pyongyang possesses 57 nuclear warheads and stressed the importance of dialogue with the North Korean leader.
Pyongyang's reaction to Trump's proposal was rather cool. While the North Korean side acknowledged the “excellent personal relationship” between the two leaders, it hinted that serious concessions from Washington might be required for a new summit to take place.
According to experts, Pyongyang might demand that the US abandon policies it considers hostile or that North Korea's status as a nuclear state be de facto recognized.
Trump is reportedly hoping to meet with Kim Jong Un within the framework of the APEC summit to be held in China at the end of the year. However, experts are cautious about expecting significant diplomatic progress from such a meeting.
The reason for this is cited as North Korea further strengthening its relations with Russia and China. This reduces Pyongyang's dependence on US sanctions pressure compared to previous periods.
